Sovereignty

Today I was meditating on God’s sovereignty. It could be a simple and clear concept to understand. Sovereignty: is the quality of having supreme, independent authority over a territory. If we apply this definition to how God executes sovereignty, we can say that his territory is everything around us, including ourselves. Simple, right?

However this word starts becoming confusing and even overwhelming when situations in our lives start changing in a way we never expected or desired. Personally, I learned and understood God’s sovereignty when my mom was diagnosed with cancer and after eight years of blessings, miracles and promises from my heavenly Father, she passed away. I remember asking the Lord Jesus Christ why did my mom get sick, why did she have to go through eight years of struggle, why, why and why.  In the midst of my guilt for questioning Jesus, He showed me clearly through the Bible that there was nothing wrong with asking and questioning him. The Book of Psalms is a clear example of it. See Psalm 10:1″Why, O Lord, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?”

The Lord understands, cares and answers. So the issue is, are we ready to listen to him?

When my mom passed away, the Lord answered me with three words: I AM SOVEREIGN. He can do whatever He wants without our consent. Yes, it may sound tough, rude and authoritarian but it was not when He showed me the big picture of my mom’s suffering. God fulfilled every promise He made to my mom during those years of struggle and pain. My mom quit smoking from one day to the other without external help (i.e. patches, gums, etc). She just did it with the Lord’s strength and never went back. She was healed from deep emotional wounds and became free. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom! She got to know Jesus as never before. She even went to Bible school and graduated the year she passed away. She became a facilitator at her church’s women’s ministry. Her testimony not only brought many people to Christ but increased their faith in Him. He was all able to restored the life of a woman who’s identity was built on her former husband and children.Through my mom’s battle with cancer the Lord did marvelous things.

Life is not easy. You can be going through a hard time. But do not be discourage. If you surrender your everything before the Lord Jesus and acknowledge him as your savior and king of your life, He will take your sorrow and turn it into joy. He is able to make those “dead bones” live, to restore your family and marriage.

Instead of or in addition to asking him “why”, ask him “what for”. Be ready to listen and witness the amazing things that He can do through your life.
